Howie Set to Star for Team GB

Peebles ace Darren Howie will cap an outstanding final year in the junior ranks when he lines for the Great Britain and Ireland boys side which takes on the Continent of Europe in this weekend’s Jacques Léglise Trophy.

The 17-year-old was the only Scot selected by The R&A for the nine-player team, who take on Europe’s finest in the match which gets underway at Ballybunion in Ireland today (Friday 1 September).

The match is the junior equivalent of the Walker Cup, with Darren joining the cream of boys talent from England, Ireland and Wales for the two-day event comprising of foursomes and singles on both Friday and Saturday. He follows in the footsteps of players such as Sergio Garcia and Luke Donald who have competed for Europe and GB&I in the past, while Renato Panatore who played in the event just three years ago was a winner on the European Tour this season.

Howie has enjoyed a superb season and is the runaway leader of the Scottish Boys Order of Merit. He finished top of the qualifying for last month’s British Boys Amateur Championship at Nairn, having also led the stroke play qualifying for the Scottish Boys Championship earlier in the summer. Howie was a winner of the Scottish Junior Tour in April, runner-up in the Henry Cooper Junior Masters and finished third in the Scottish Boys Stroke Play Championship as well as reaching the last-16 of the Scottish Men’s Amateur Championship.

Club captain Graham Lowther said: “We congratulate Darren on yet another fantastic achievement in being selected for the Great Britain and Ireland side. It is a huge honour for the club to have one of our members in the side for such a prestigious event and he and his brother Craig continue to be superb ambassadors for Peebles on the national and international stage. We wish him all the best for the next two days of competition.”

Odd Shaped Ball Golf Day - Results & Prize List

A record total of 47 teams and 188 competitors took part in our annual Odd Shaped Ball Golf Day on Saturday 19 August, with a mix of young and old, men and women, members and guests supporting the event.

Congratulations to the winning team of Sheila Cuthbertson, Eden Collins, Braden Collins and Gregor Wells who took top spot with a superb score of 55, playing with a handicap of 18. They win a £30 voucher each and a 4-ball at Crail Golfing Society's Craighead Links, as well as the coveted Odd Shaped Ball silver shades.

Runners-up were Darren Massey, Gary Muir, James Morrison and Fraser Richards on 57.1 while Ross Duncan Hugh Harvie, Grant Foster and Mark Hosker were 3rd on 58.55. Prizes were awarded to the top 7 teams.

Mixed Fortunes for Howies at the Scottish Amateur Championship | Latest News

Craig and Darren Howie were both in action on the national stage at last week’s Scottish Amateur Championship at Prestwick, flying the flag for Peebles. With the top-64 from a field of 260 players qualifying for the match play stages after two rounds, both Peebles stars made it through safely on three-over par in a share of 29th place.

After a thumping 6&4 win in his first round match, Craig drew number one seed Sandy Scott from Nairn in the last-32 but after a thrilling game, he went down by one hole at the final green. Younger brother Darren enjoyed a superb 3&2 win in his first round match against Scotland Boys team-mate Rory Franssen then reached the last 16 with a win against Benjamin Henderson from Deeside. However, he came unstuck with a place in the quarter-finals up for grabs against the impressive Stuart Easton from Irvine, going down 5&4, but can be pleased with his week’s performance going into the Boys Home Internationals at St Anne’s this week as Scotland’s number one ranked junior golfer.

Davie at the Double

Fresh from teaming up with his son Sam to win last week’s Pro’s Day, form man Davie Tait made it two-in-a-row with an excellent performance on Saturday to win the Holmes Bowl. The six-handicapper posted an impressive two-over 72, with included birdies at the 6th, 9th and 13th for a nett 66, finishing one clear of Ian Stewart. Who would bet against the Eddleston man claiming the hatrick in this weekend’s Thorburn Cup, an event he has won before?

Another former Thorburn Cup champion Colin Fraser continued his fine form to score his second five-under 65 in recent weeks during the last the third round of the Holiday Tankard, posting an impressive six birdies. But it was not quite good enough to take top spot on the night, with Colin Brown edging ‘Frase’ on nett 65 thanks to his excellent one-under scratch 69. Brown reached the 14th hole in three-under thanks to three birdies in a row from the 11th, but dropped shots at the 16th and 17th. Great golf from both players!

Ladies Round-Up

Impressive scoring also in the ladies section with Lorna Rutherford winning the Seniors' Trophy thanks to a 69(18) and Martha Shortreed scoring 38 points to lift the Veitch Cup. Next up is the Autumn Meeting on Monday 14 August, with the latest SGA Medal taking place the following Monday, 21 August.

Aiken Brothers One-Two

Testing conditions greeted the players for Sunday’s Junior Monthly Medal, which proved to be a battle of the ever-improving Aiken brothers. Elder brother Ross just came out on top with a nett 70 (21), one shot clear of Murray, with Kerr Sutherland on third also on 71 and Fearghas Lowther fourth a shot further back. Credit to all the players who took part on Sunday, with only three shots separating the top five players. ClubGolf coaching made its return and congratulations go to Sam Lees and Lewis George who were last Sunday’s Players of the Week.

Odd Shaped Ball Golf Day

We’ve had a great response to our forthcoming Odd Shaped Ball Golf Day, taking place next Saturday 19 August, with more than 40 teams already entered. A few team spaces are still available however, so let’s try and get the day completely full! A team of four costs £20 with some fantastic prizes up for grabs in the competition and the raffle and a few surprises in store on the course. Peebles Golf Club endorse “Ready Golf”

“Ready golf” is a commonly used term which indicates that players should play when they are ready to do so, rather than adhering strictly to the “farthest from the hole plays first” stipulation in the Rules of Golf.

“Ready golf” is not appropriate in match play due to the strategy involved between opponents and the need to have a set method for determining which player plays first. However, in stroke play formats it is only the act of agreeing to play out of turn to give one of the players an advantage that is prohibited. On this basis, it is permissible for administrators to encourage “ready golf” in stroke play, and there is strong evidence to suggest that playing “ready golf” does improve the pace of play. When “ready golf” is being encouraged, players have to act sensibly to ensure that playing out of turn does not endanger other players.

The term “ready golf” has been adopted by many as a catch-all phrase for a number of actions that separately and collectively can improve pace of play. There is no official definition of the term, but examples of “ready golf” in action are:

·         Hitting a shot when safe to do so if a player farther away faces a challenging shot and is taking time to assess their options

·         Shorter hitters playing first from the tee or fairway if longer hitters have to wait

·         Hitting a tee shot if the person with the honour is delayed in being ready to play

·         Hitting a shot before helping someone to look for a lost ball

·         Putting out even if it means standing close to someone else’s line

·         Hitting a shot if a person who has just played from a greenside bunker is still farthest from the hole but is delayed due to raking the bunker

·         When a player’s ball has gone over the back of a green, any player closer to the hole but chipping from the front of the green should play while the other player is having to walk to their ball and assess their shot

·         Marking scores upon immediate arrival at the next tee, except that the first player to tee off marks their card immediately after teeing off

This agreement allows members from each club to play each other’s courses for the rate of £14 per person.

Old Course Ranfurly Golf Club in Renfrewshire: www.oldranfurly.com

This agreement allows members from each club to play Monday to Friday, free golf up to a maximum of 4 players on any one day.

We hope to welcome members from both Bray and Old Course Ranfurly Golf Club to Peebles in the near future. We see this as a fantastic opportunity to enable our members to develop friendships built on the game of Golf.

The following Terms of Reference shall apply to this Agreement:

1. The intent of this agreement is to permit Club Members in good standing to have full playing and clubhouse privileges at the reciprocal club, subject to the respective host clubs local rules, bye-laws, regulations policies and this agreement. 
2. Reciprocal Members are not required to play with or be accompanied by a Member of the host Club.
3. No signing privileges are allowed.  Reciprocal Members are to pay for all purchases by cash or credit card.
4. Tee times must be reserved by contacting the host club in advance.  Proof of Membership (Membership card) plus a letter of introduction from the Secretary/General Manager must be produced on arrival. 
5. A Reciprocal Member shall be entitled to play up to twelve (12) rounds of golf per calendar year at the host club.
6. Reciprocal Members are not permitted to introduce guests.

Enter a Team in the Odd Shaped Ball Golf Fundraising Day

One of the most popular additions to the fixture list last year was the Odd Shaped Ball Golf Day and we are delighted to advise you that the event will be taking place again soon, being held on Saturday 19 August.

The Odd Shaped Ball has raised £18,000 for junior sport in Peebles over the past four years with Peebles Golf Club members making a great contribution to the cause, with our junior section also benefitting from the proceeds. Fundraising from this year’s Golf Day will go towards junior golf and supporting young golfers in Peebles and we would be hugely grateful if you could support our event next month.

Run by the ClubGolf coaching team, the competition is a Team Scramble format with a few twists and sporting themes, open to all members with a handicap (men, women and juniors), as well as guests from other clubs. All you need to take part is a team of four, which can also be mixed and can include guests from other clubs. If you don’t have a team of four, you can also put your name on the online entry and we’ll encourage other individuals to make up the team.

Entry costs £20 per team (payable on the day) with some fantastic prizes up for grabs, including the leading four teams and nearest the pin at each of the four short holes. Some great raffle prizes will also be on offer on the day, in addition to drinks and a BBQ on the 10th tee. Like last year, the odd obstacle may appear on the course, there may be a few suspect pin positions and alternative equipment will be provided on one of the tees!

Fraser Fires Superb Score to Win Centenary Trophy | Round-Up

Twenty-five years on from its first playing when Jim McAuslin donned the famous ‘Red Jersey’ by winning the inaugural Centenary Trophy, Colin Fraser etched his name on Peebles’ own Claret Jug after firing a superb five-under par 65 on Saturday.

He scorched to the turn in just 31 helped by four consecutive threes from the sixth hole including an eagle at the ninth. A further birdie followed at the 13th and Fraser bounced back from a bogey at the 17th hole to seal victory with an excellent birdie at the last. He finished a shot clear of Tommy Wynn junior, who edged out Blair Cormack for the runner-up spot thanks to his better inward half.

The previous weekend saw joyous celebrations on the balcony after Stuart ‘Loose’ Boak won his first ever competition, shooting a nett 66 (28) to clinch the Scotsdale July Medal. Declan Hegarty finished second with a fine 67 (5), with Ewen Leggatt third on the same score.

PING Scottish Mixed Championship Qualifier

The last of the season's major Mixed Foursomes events was the PING Scottish Championship Qualifier, with the top 40 Scottish club qualifiers earning a spot at the finals at Gleneagles later in the year. Susan and John Brown came out on top with 39 points, with Patricia and Sandy Wood finishing runners-up on 36 points. Lorna Rutherford and Steven Waldie scored 66.4 in the Charity Mixed Foursomes competition, edging out Marny Waddell & John Elliot (67).

Ladies Round-Up

There was a great turnout of 30 competitors for the Centenary Trophy. Five ladies played below par (CSS 71) with Glynis Reid winning her second trophy in a fortnight with a fine 68(26), edging out Moira Boocock 69(22). Meanwhile, on a day of high scoring, Betty Scott won the Boocock Trophy with a score of 73(23) with Patricia Wood and Mary MacIntyre winning their respective divisions in last Monday;s Stableford competition, both with scores of 32 points.

Junior Results

Fast improving youngster Murray Aiken blew the rest of the field away to win the Cuddy Cup and Tweeddale Qualifier thanks to an incredible nett 59 (35), with Jamie Clark and Michael Smith second and third both with good scores of nett 68. Despite his handicap tumbling to 28, Aiken went onto finish second in the following week’s Junior Monthly Medal and Rotary Club Competition with a nett 72, but it was another promising youngster, Rueben Sterricks who came out on top, three shots ahead on nett 69 (27).

South of Scotland Ladies Jamboree

Peebles Golf Club were honoured to host the recent South of Scotland, a qualifier for the Scottish County finals which will be held at Glenbervie Golf Club in Stirlingshire later this year. Teams from Dumfriesshire County, Galloway County and Borders played three foursomes in the morning and six singles in the afternoon.

With some of the country’s leading ladies on show, the standard of golf was amazing to watch, a lesson in “how to strike a ball” and a barrage of birdies. The course was in fantastic order and our guests gave great feedback on the high standards of the course and the clubhouse. Unfortunately for the hosts, the Border Ladies missed out on a place in the final by just a single point, with Dumfriesshire County winning a place in the Scottish finals. Good luck to the ladies!

Magical Morris Storms to Championship and Open Double

It was a weekend to remember for local golfing star Jamie Morris as he made it nine Club Championship wins on Saturday followed by a remarkable win number ten on Sunday in the Peebles Open.

Having celebrated Championship win number nine, he turned his attention to the Peebles Open on Sunday, with the event enjoying a packed field of 187 golfers from across the country. Despite starting with a double-bogey five, Jamie reached the turn in 33, thanks to a spectacular eagle two at the fourth, and finished with three consecutive birdies to romp home in just 30, for a superb 7-under par 63. It was his lowest ever round at Peebles, two shots outside Darren Howie’s course record set last year, matching the previous record held jointly by Colin Fraser and Norrie Forsyth.

Meanwhile, Eric Mapp and Jim Edgar junior took the glory in the Second Class section of the Peebles Open on Sunday. Mapp produced an fine nett 65 (19) to win the handicap section by three shots from Alan Sinclair, while Edgar’s score of 78 gave him the scratch prize, beating B Championship semi-finalist Keith McIntosh on the better inward half.

A great turnout for the club’s biggest event of the season with great feedback from members and visitors on the condition of the course. A huge thanks to Stevie Borthwick and his greenkeeping staff, as well as Competitions Convenor Mary McIntyre and her team of volunteers, who worked tirelessly throughout the day from 7.30am through to 9.30pm!

Club Championship Final Results

Sheila cuthbertson won the ladies club championship for the 20th time

Attention all you ladies out there who think golf is only for the younger generation. Both the Ladies Championship and the Laverock Cup (Bronze Division Championship) were won by septuagenarians!

Fairways veteran Sheila Cuthbertson overcame the challenge of Denise Richards, playing in her first final, by a margin of 5&4, to lift her 20th title. In the semi-finals, Sheila defeated Patricia Wood 5&3 and Denise overcame June-Anne Clark's challenge by two holes.

A truly inspirational Lilian Smith defeated Julie Oram, a second-time finalist, 5&3, to win the Laverock Cup for the first time. Lilian was diagnosed with cancer in 2015 and only completed her treatment in February last year. In the semi-finals, Lilian beat Iris French and Julie defeated Katie Brackenridge. Congratulations to both ladies.

Morris Makes it Nine

NINE TIME CHAMPION JAMIE MORRIS

Jamie Morris etched his name on the Club Championship board for a ninth time on Saturday evening as he moved closer to TT Sanderson's record of 15 wins.

Morris, who won his first Club Championship twenty years ago, swept aside Colin Fraser in Saturday morning’s semi-final to set up a mouth-watering clash against former Scotland international Allan Turnbull, who defeated defending champion Steven Waldie in the other last four tie.

The final was a high quality match although neither player was able to get the putter working to great effect, with Morris edging clear early on before a Turnbull eagle levelled the match at the ninth. Morris got his nose in front after the turn and never relinquished his lead, holing a tricky putt down the hill at the 17th for a half, before a half in pars on the final green sealed victory with a one-hole advantage.

In the B Championship Final, Ryan Forsyth came from behind to beat Jamie Fenton 3&1, recovering from a three-hole deficit after six holes. Forsyth battled back with birdies on 8 and 9 to level the match. Fenton edged ahead with a conceded birdie at the 10th, but the turning point proved to be a Fenton three-putt at the 13th which levelled things again, as Forsyth pulled clear with wins at 14 and 15. He had a chance to win the match on the 16th but the putt slipped by, before producing a stunning sand save par to clinch it on the 17th.

FEARGHAS LOWTHER - JUNIOR CHAMPION

The C Championship proved a more one-sided affair as Keith McDonald overcame Allan Davidson in the final to secure his first title. Fearghas Lowther fought back to beat Fraser Imlah by two holes in an excellent Junior Championship Final, with both players producing excellent golf throughout the round. Imlah raced to an early lead, but Lowther finished strongly with pars at the closing five holes.
