Evergreen Tom wins the Captain and Vice Captain's Trophy

Tom Litster, who earlier this season achieved 2 holes in one in the same round, rounded off a fantastic season by lifting the Captain and Vice Captain's Trophy.

The top 16 players from an early season qualifying round competed for this trophy throughout the summer in match play format with Tom emerging victorious.

This is the second time Tom has won this trophy with his first victory being a remarkable 53 years ago! ( this was the year the Beatles released their first single and Dr No, the first James Bond film, was released)

Well done Tom - you are an inspiration to all Senior golfers.

Another close encounter for the Seniors at Minto

The Peebles Seniors had another very close match with Minto this week and were keen to build on their narrow home win earlier in the season.

In ideal conditions the opening match was a close affair with Sandy Burnett and Rodger Scott finishing all square.

Peebles then suffered 3 reversals with Andrew Waddell and David McKean losing 6&4, Brian Robson and Andy Tucker losing 3&1 and Ian Pemberton and Stuart Duncan  losing 3&2.

Peebles finished strongly however with George Cunningham and Neil Byers winning their match 2&1 and Vic Roberts and Tom Lister also winning by the same score.

The match score of Minto 3 and a half points , Peebles 2 and a half points was a mirror image of the home win in June. Overall the honours were even over the 2 encounters with our friends from Minto.

TAMS teams do well on Sponsor's Day!

The TAMS achieved a great result in last Friday's Sponsor's Day competition.

In first place was the Team led by Steve Farrar ( who most graciously donated a defibrillator to the Club) and supported by Warner Hardie, Sandy Macfarlane and Bill Hardcastle. Well done boys!

In third place was the Team including George Langlands and Richard Edmonds.

There was a modest turnout of 15 players on Thursday 17 September. Eric Ward took a well deserved first place with a net 30 and Jim McAuslin was second with a net 31. Bob Duncan was nearest the pin at the 7th. There were no birdies and no birthdays to report.

TAMS RESULTS

The TAMS results are being brought to you from sunny Arizona this week. Isn't technology a wonderful thing?

3rd September. John Forsyth ran away with 1st place with 25 Stableford points. Jim McAuslin was second with a credible 20 points. Sandy Mafarlane was nearest the pin at the 7th and converted the birdie putt. There were also birdies at the 7th for Ronnie Watt and at the 5th for Steve Farrar.

10th September. There were requests for a steward's enquiry/ blood tests when George Tucker took first place with a net 28. Our oldest TAM Steve Baczkowski was second on 30. Bill Hardcastle was nearest the pin at the 7th with David Wallace returning the only birdie of the day at the 8th.

Seniors' Matches v West Linton and Minto

The next match for the Seniors' Team is away to West Linton on Monday 14th September. The team then travels to Minto on Thursday 24th September.

Due to holiday commitments,  Graeme Murray will take charge of the team for the West Linton match and Brian Robson will do the honours for the Minto match. A big thank you to both gentlemen for agreeing to do this.

The team sheets for both matches will be posted on the notice board at 12.30 pm on Saturday 29th August.

George has game of his life but Peebles Seniors go down to Glencorse

Peebles Seniors lost narrowly to Glencorse on Tuesday 25th August to bring their unbeaten run to an end. The Glencorse team capitalised on home advantage to edge out Peebles on the 'quirky' Penicuik course.

Peebles started brightly with George Cunningham and George Langlands recording an impressive 4 & 2 victory. Speaking after the match, George Langlands described his playing partner as having had the 'game of his life'.

Andrew Waddell and Sam Walker lost the next match narrowly by 2 &1. Biggest disappointment of the day came in the next match where David Wright and Brian Robson lost their first match playing together by being comprehensively beaten 6 & 4.

David McKean and Ken Morrison then established parity with an excellent 3 & 2 win. However the day was not to belong to Peebles as the pairings of Ian Pemberton and Ian Mewett, and Donald Jamie and Graeme Murray both lost their matches 5 & 3 and 5 & 4 respectively.

TAMS find the going tough in the rough!

With several players scoring double figures at individual holes the TAMS found the difficult/wet conditions in the rough and the bunkers hard to cope with this week - or it may just have been down to the lack of skill!

3 players tied on net 33 this week and after countback Ken Bowie emerged victorious. A new member to the group. Eric Ward, took second place and Eric was also nearest to the pin at the 7th hole.  Brian Robson got a very good birdie at the 4th hole.

Well done to all 21 players who took part this week.

Seniors continue their unbeaten run

The Seniors' Team continued their unbeaten run with a narrow win at Torwoodlee on the 27th July.

With heavy rain forecast there was considerable doubt if the match would go ahead but when the teams assembled it was decided to venture forth and brave the unseasonable conditions. Despite heavy overnight rain and the constant wet conditions the Torwoodlee course was in pretty good condition for play.

First back in the clubhouse was the very experienced pairing of Tom Litster and David McKean who edged out their opponents with a one hole victory. David Wright and Brian Robson found themselves 4 down after 4 holes but the pair dug deep to earn a well deserved half by the end of their encounter. Brian and David have now played 10 Senior Matches together and they remain undefeated with 9 wins and one match halved.

In Match 3, Torwoodlee evened up the score with Vic Roberts and Sam Walker going down 3&2.

The next 2 matches were very close affairs with Ian Pemberton and Ian Mewett and the pairing of Gordon Fisher and Neil Byers both halving their matches.

With the match score at 2 and half points each the teams waited in the clubhouse for the final match to conclude. George Cunningham and Mike Wilson were obviously enjoying the course conditions and arrived in the clubhouse a full half hour after everyone had finished their lunch! George took great delight in informing his Peebles team mates that he sank the winning putt on the 18th green for a one hole victory.

Despite the weather, players from both teams enjoyed the match and Peebles continued their winning form with a 3 and a half to 2 and a half victory.

Special thanks must go to David McKean who responded to the early morning phone call to play following a last minute call off.

THE NEXT MATCH FOR THE SENIORS IS AGAINST GLENCORSE ON TUESDAY 25TH AUGUST.

OPEN week TAMS results

The TAMS were inspired this week by events at St Andrews.

A long birdie famine was replaced this week by a superb birdie feast!

Winner this week was Bob Duncan with a great net 27 accompanied by the 'neary' at the 7th and a birdie at the 7th as well!

Alan Urquhart edged out Bill Hardcastle on a count back for second place with a net 31. Bill Hardcastle was best gross on 39 with a super birdie on No 1.

Gordon Smith, David Parker and Roger Key all birdied the 7th.

Your club needs YOU!

We have had three very successful Opens this season already with more to follow next month.  To run these events needs a lot of support from our members; table/computer duty, starters and behind the scenes people both beforehand and on the day.  There will be a sheet on the Mixed noticeboard (beside the telephone in the main entrance) for volunteers for each individual event. Even if you can only spare an hour that would be very welcome - please sign up.

Octogenarian Alan Wilkie celebrates in style

Alan Wilkie enjoyed a round of golf with his golfing buddies on Friday 3rd July then treated them all to a slap up meal in the clubhouse to celebrate his 80th birthday.

After everyone enjoyed huge platefuls of bacon, eggs, sausages, tomatoes, beans, mushrooms, chips and toast, Gordon Fisher, on behalf of the group, wished Alan a very happy Birthday and thanked him for his hospitality. Describing Alan as a 'true gentleman' he wished him many more happy golfing years!

Playing golf with Alan is a memorable experience. His interesting stories coupled with his dry sense of humour always make for a pleasurable round. However the highlight of any round with Alan is watching him swing a golf club. Alan possesses one the best swings in Peebles - one which most of us can only dream of emulating!

On behalf of everyone at Peebles Golf Club - Happy Birthday Alan.
